Santos Rally Past Early Shock to Reach Copa Sudamericana Round of 16
SANTOS, Brazil, July 29 — Brazilian club Santos overcame an early setback to defeat Venezuela's Universidad Central 4-2 on Thursday, securing an emphatic 8-3 aggregate victory and booking a place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.
The home side fell behind after only 19 seconds at Vila Belmiro Stadium following a costly defensive error, but responded with four goals to complete a comfortable win and continue its campaign for continental silverware.
Universidad Central stunned the hosts almost immediately when defender Adonis Frías misplaced a back pass inside his own half. Samuel Sosa intercepted the ball and calmly lifted his finish over goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão to give the visitors a dream start.
Despite the early blow, Santos gradually regained control of the contest and found an equalizer before halftime. Bolivian midfielder Miguelito produced an impressive solo effort, driving forward before finishing clinically to level the score at 1-1.
After the break, Santos increased the intensity and introduced several key players from the bench, a move that quickly shifted momentum further in its favor.
Gabriel Barbosa put the Brazilian side ahead in the second half after converting a well-worked move created by Gabriel Bontempo. The lead was extended in the 65th minute when Gabriel Menino reacted quickest to a rebound after Barbosa's attempt struck the crossbar, making it 3-1.
The Venezuelan visitors briefly threatened a comeback when Gonzalo Montes reduced the deficit in the 72nd minute. However, any hopes of a revival were short-lived.
Rony sealed the result late in the match, finishing another assist from Bontempo to restore Santos' two-goal advantage and complete a 4-2 victory on the night.
Brazilian star Neymar, who began the match on the bench, entered during the second half but played a limited role in the outcome. The veteran forward was unable to add a goal or assist as Santos comfortably progressed to the knockout stage.
With the victory, Santos advances to the Round of 16, where it will face Ecuadorian side Macará as the club continues its pursuit of a Copa Sudamericana title.
