BNP Dragged Into ECB Chattar Attack Despite Claims of Jamaat-AL Rivalry, Says Student Leader

Abidul Islam Khan Abid, joint general secretary of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, criticised Muqtadir’s comments in a video statement posted on social media. He alleged that Muqtadir had attempted to associate the BNP with extortion allegations without sufficient evidence.
The comments followed an attack on BrownFish Studio, founded by Muqtadir, at the New Gini Properties housing project in Dhaka’s ECB Chattar area late on September 26. The studio was among several properties reportedly vandalised and looted during the incident. Police have said the violence was linked primarily to a dispute over land possession and control.
According to Abid, the incident involved an underlying conflict between individuals associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and the Awami League. He claimed that a dispute over land and control intensified after August 5 and eventually contributed to the confrontation at the housing project.
Those claims have not been independently established. Police have publicly described the incident as stemming from a land dispute between two sides and said the matter remains under investigation.
Attack damaged studio and other properties
The violence began at around 10:30pm on September 26, according to eyewitness accounts cited by local media. Reports said a large group entered the New Gini Properties compound, with witnesses describing gunfire and widespread vandalism.
Muqtadir’s studio suffered extensive damage, with furniture, electronic equipment and other property reportedly destroyed or looted. Nearby houses, the housing company’s office and an under-construction building were also affected.
Muqtadir later posted a video showing the condition of his studio and alleged that the attack was connected to an extortion dispute. He also suggested that his studio may have been caught in a wider conflict involving the property’s landowner.
The allegations concerning BNP involvement have generated political debate. Abid said the BNP should not be held responsible for the attack without evidence establishing the party or its members’ involvement.
Police investigation under way
Police have detained and arrested several people in connection with the incident. A case was filed naming 10 individuals along with 150–200 unidentified suspects, while police sought remand for some of those arrested. Authorities also reported recovering weapons and spent bullet casings from suspects.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner Mahidul Islam said the initial investigation indicated that the violence was connected to a dispute over possession and control of land at the housing project.
Abid also criticised Muqtadir for what he described as a pattern of making inaccurate or misleading statements about sensitive incidents. He urged the content creator to exercise greater caution and verify information before making public allegations.
At the same time, Abid condemned the attack itself and said those responsible should face legal action. In an earlier statement, he described the attack on Muqtadir’s studio as a matter of shame and called for punishment of those responsible.
The incident has now raised broader questions over land disputes, alleged extortion, political influence and accountability in Dhaka. While competing political claims have emerged, the precise motives behind the attack and the identities and affiliations of those responsible remain matters for the ongoing investigation to establish.
For now, police findings and judicial proceedings will be central to determining whether the attack was primarily the result of a land dispute, an extortion-related conflict, or a combination of factors—and whether any political organisation was directly involved.
