Bangladesh Bakery Fined for Allegedly Using Rotten Eggs and Contaminated Ingredients
NOAKHALI, Bangladesh, Aug. 18 —
The action was taken on Monday during an inspection at Ruchika Food Industries in the Datterhat area of Sadar upazila, according to the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection.
The inspection was led by Md. Asadul Islam, assistant director of the Noakhali office of the consumer rights agency.
Officials said inspectors found that the bakery was mixing fresh and rotten eggs collected from the market to prepare cakes. Rotten and broken eggs were emitting a foul smell, they said.
The inspection also found that the bakery was using dirty syrup containing impurities to make a bun locally known as “Honeycomb”, allegedly without following basic hygiene standards.
Authorities subsequently fined the establishment 40,000 taka under Section 43 of Bangladesh’s Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.
A large quantity of rotten eggs and contaminated sugar syrup was seized during the operation and later destroyed, officials said.
Regular food safety inspections
Asadul Islam said the operation was part of the agency’s routine monitoring activities aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring compliance with food safety and consumer protection regulations.
“We will continue such operations in the public interest,” he said.
A team from the district Ansar battalion assisted the consumer protection officials during the inspection.
The authorities said similar inspections would continue and that action would be taken against food businesses found violating consumer protection and hygiene requirements.
The incident highlights continuing concerns over food safety and hygiene standards in Bangladesh’s food-processing and bakery sector, where regulatory authorities periodically conduct inspections and impose penalties for violations.
