Bangladesh Can Shock Any Opponent, Says Head Coach Thomas Doley

DHAKA —

Bangladesh's national football team is beginning to look like a very different side from the one seen in previous years, with greater confidence, resilience and a willingness to compete against stronger opponents.

Head coach Thomas Doley believes the team has developed the ability to challenge established sides and could produce surprises against even more highly rated opponents—provided the players are physically prepared and the team gets the right competitive exposure.

Bangladesh's recent performances in the AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign have strengthened that belief, with the national side showing greater competitiveness against stronger opposition.

For Doley, however, the next challenge is not simply producing an occasional impressive performance. It is building a team capable of competing consistently at international level.

Bangladesh Ready to Embrace the Underdog Role

Doley expects Bangladesh to enter matches against stronger regional opponents as the underdog.

But he believes that status could work in the team's favour.

The pressure to prove themselves will largely fall on the stronger opponents, while Bangladesh can focus on executing its game plan, remaining disciplined and competing for every ball.

Doley's message is straightforward: if his players can reach full physical fitness, Bangladesh will have the ability to trouble teams that are considered favourites.

“We may start as the underdog, but that can also be an advantage. The pressure to prove themselves will be on the opposition. Our responsibility is to fight on the pitch. If our players are 100 per cent fit, we can surprise anyone.”

Stronger Opponents Could Provide Valuable Preparation

One of Bangladesh's biggest needs is regular exposure to high-level international football.

Playing stronger opponents exposes players to a faster tempo, greater physical demands and more intense tactical situations. Such matches can also help players understand how to maintain concentration and discipline under sustained pressure.

Doley therefore sees competitive international fixtures as an important part of Bangladesh's preparation for the SAFF Championship.

The official 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup competition itself does not include Bangladesh; the tournament features 10 Southeast Asian teams. Any opportunity for Bangladesh to face strong ASEAN sides would therefore need to come through separate international or preparatory fixtures rather than participation in the official tournament.

Fitness Remains a Major Concern

For Doley, one of the biggest obstacles facing Bangladesh is physical preparation.

International football demands a high level of fitness over 90 minutes, particularly against teams that play at a fast tempo.

A comprehensive pre-season programme and enough competitive matches are essential for players to reach that level. But Bangladesh's domestic football environment does not always provide the ideal conditions for such preparation.

That leaves the coaching staff with the difficult task of developing international-level fitness within limited preparation periods.

The issue goes beyond endurance. Fitness affects a player's ability to make correct decisions late in games, maintain defensive concentration, preserve attacking intensity and avoid mistakes under pressure.

Lessons From the Asian Cup Qualifiers

Bangladesh's recent Asian Cup qualifying campaign provided valuable experience against international opposition.

The team finished its Group C campaign with five points, ending the campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Singapore.

Although the final results did not fully match the team's ambitions, the experience of competing against stronger opponents could prove important as Bangladesh prepares for future tournaments.

Doley's challenge now is to turn that experience into a more consistent and competitive national side.

SAFF Championship Offers a Major Opportunity

Bangladesh's attention is increasingly turning towards the SAFF Championship, with the 2026 men's tournament scheduled to be hosted by Bangladesh.

Playing on home soil could provide an important advantage, particularly through the support of local fans. But hosting the tournament will also bring additional expectations and pressure.

For Doley, success at a tournament of this nature requires more than individual moments of brilliance.

A team needs consistency, fitness, mental strength, tactical discipline and the ability to perform under pressure throughout the competition.

Winning a tournament requires almost everything to work together.

Tough Matches Can Build Confidence

One of the most important elements of Bangladesh's preparation will be opportunities to face strong opponents before the SAFF Championship.

Confidence at international level cannot be built entirely through training sessions.

It grows when players experience difficult matches, survive periods of pressure and discover that they can compete with teams that may appear stronger on paper.

That is why the quality of Bangladesh's upcoming international fixtures could be crucial.

If the team can secure matches against stronger regional opposition, those encounters could provide valuable preparation for the challenges ahead.

Doley's Bigger Challenge: Building a Competitive Team

Doley's task is not simply to produce one or two impressive results.

His larger objective is to build a more competitive, disciplined and consistent Bangladesh national team.

The Bangladesh Football Federation appointed Doley as head coach in May 2026. Before taking the role, he had worked as an assistant coach with the United States national team and had also held coaching responsibilities with the Philippines.

His international experience will now be tested in Bangladesh, where expectations are rising but structural challenges remain.

A Difficult Road, But Plenty of Potential

Bangladesh still faces significant challenges.

Limited international exposure, gaps in player fitness, the need for more high-quality competitive matches and the demands of the domestic football calendar all present obstacles.

But Doley believes those limitations cannot become excuses.

Instead, the team must make the most of every opportunity.

Bangladesh may not enter every match as the favourite. But international football is not decided on paper.

It is decided over 90 minutes.

If Bangladesh can execute its tactical plan, maintain physical intensity and remain mentally strong until the final whistle, the team can make life extremely difficult for stronger opponents.

And that is where the new Bangladesh side's biggest opportunity may lie: starting as the underdog, but finishing the match as the team nobody expected to win.

For a country eager to end its long wait for a major regional title, that fighting spirit could prove decisive.
