Tarique Rahman’s India Visit ‘Nearly Certain’ for Aug. 21-22, Officials Say

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to travel to New Delhi for a bilateral visit in the third week of August, with Aug. 21-22 emerging as the likely dates, according to several government sources in Dhaka.

The dates could shift by a few days, the officials said, adding that the proposed visit originated with India and that Bangladesh has indicated Rahman is prepared to travel.

Preparations are already under way for what would be Rahman’s first visit to India as prime minister. However, Bangladeshi officials said Dhaka has raised several issues that it wants addressed before the trip is finalised.

Bangladesh seeks assurances over Hasina’s political activities

One of the key issues concerns former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in India since Aug. 5, 2024, following her removal from power.

Bangladeshi officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Dhaka wants assurances that Hasina will not continue making political statements or engaging in political activities from India.

The officials alleged that Hasina’s public political interventions have generated controversy inside Bangladesh and claimed they could contribute to instability in the country.

They said Bangladesh wants a firm assurance from India that such activities will be halted, describing that assurance as a condition for confirming Rahman’s visit.

According to the officials, India has already provided some form of assurance on the matter, but Dhaka is seeking a more definitive commitment before finalising the trip.

Possible BRICS-related visit in September

Separately, Rahman has also been invited to attend a BRICS summit scheduled to take place in New Delhi in September, according to the information provided by Bangladeshi officials.

The invitation was extended in Rahman’s capacity as the current chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

However, a decision has not yet been made on whether Rahman will attend the September event.

An Indian media report has also said Rahman could travel to India for a two-day visit around the middle of next week, broadly matching the Aug. 21-22 timeframe cited by Bangladeshi sources.
