Bangladesh Faces Five More Days of Rain, Heavy Downpours Possible From Sunday

Rainfall is expected to continue across Bangladesh for at least five more days, with showers likely to intensify in several parts of the country over the weekend, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The weather office said some areas could experience moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly on Sunday. Temporary gusty winds accompanied by rain or thunderstorms are also likely during the period.

The forecast, issued for the 120 hours from 6 p.m. Friday, said temperatures could fall slightly in some parts of the country as rainfall persists.

Rain and thunderstorms expected Friday

From Friday evening, many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive light to moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty winds.

Some parts of Rajshahi, Dhaka and Barishal divisions may also experience similar conditions. Moderately heavy rainfall is possible in isolated areas.

Daytime temperatures may rise slightly across the country, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.

Rainfall likely to increase over the weekend

Similar weather conditions are forecast for Saturday, Aug. 29, with rain or thunderstorms expected across many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

Some parts of Rajshahi, Dhaka and Barishal divisions may also see rainfall, with isolated areas receiving moderately heavy showers.

Temperatures are expected to remain largely stable during the day and at night.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, rainfall is likely to become more widespread. Many areas of Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may experience rain or thunderstorms, while some areas of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions could also receive showers.

The weather office warned that some parts of the country could see moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday. Daytime and nighttime temperatures may fall slightly.

Rain to continue into next week

On Monday, Aug. 31, many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions are expected to receive rain or thunderstorms. Some areas of Dhaka and Chattogram divisions may also experience showers.

Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is possible in isolated locations, while temperatures across the country may decline slightly.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions could receive rain or thunderstorms. Some parts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions may also experience rainfall.

Moderately heavy to heavy rain could occur in isolated areas, while temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.

Active monsoon system

The Meteorological Department said the axis of the monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal and central Bangladesh to Assam.

The southwest monsoon is currently fairly active over Bangladesh and remains moderate over the north Bay of Bengal.

The weather office said the rainfall trend could persist beyond Tuesday, suggesting that wet conditions may continue across different parts of Bangladesh over the extended five-day period.
