Jamaat Leader Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman Arrested Over Airport Incident
Dhaka, Bangladesh, October 2, 2026:
Police took Akhtaruzzaman into custody from his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area on Friday afternoon, according to DB officials. He was subsequently taken to the DB office for questioning.
The arrest came hours after a case was filed against him over an incident at the airport involving allegations of disorder, obstruction of official duties and assaulting or harassing a security official on duty.
The case was filed by airport security officer Mohammad Shahriar Alam Sajib at Airport Police Station. Police said the complaint was lodged under several provisions of Bangladesh's Penal Code.
Dispute Over Airport Trolley Shortage
According to the case statement, the incident occurred on Thursday morning after passengers arriving from Medina on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, BG-338, faced a shortage of luggage trolleys near baggage belt No. 8.
The shortage reportedly caused delays in collecting luggage and led to growing frustration among passengers.
Airport Executive Director Group Captain S M Ragib Samad went to the area after being informed of the situation, according to the complaint. The case alleges that Akhtaruzzaman subsequently became involved in a confrontation with airport officials.
Police said the complaint included allegations of obstructing officials in the performance of their duties, using force against a security official, insulting officials and issuing threats.
The allegations have not been established in court.
Arrest Follows Filing of Case
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the DB on Friday after the case was registered. DB officials confirmed the arrest and said he had been taken into custody in connection with the airport incident.
The arrest follows an earlier statement from Airport Police that an investigation into the allegations had been initiated.
The case and subsequent arrest have drawn attention because of Akhtaruzzaman's political background. He is a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a former member of parliament.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the airport incident, including the allegations made in the case statement, before further legal proceedings.
